Introducing the Console Testers Blog

Google Play's closed testing requirement catches most indie developers off guard: 14 testers, opted in, testing continuously for 14 straight days before you can apply for production access. This blog is where we break down how that process actually works, share what we learn from running campaigns, and keep you ahead of policy changes.

What you can expect here

Every post is written from experience running real closed testing campaigns through Console Testers. In general, posts will fall into a few buckets:

  • Guides: step-by-step walkthroughs of the production access process, from setting up your testing track to submitting the access form
  • Policy breakdowns: plain-language explanations when Google updates developer or data safety policies
  • Product updates: new Console Testers features, pricing changes, and improvements to the dashboard
  • Field notes: patterns we see across campaigns, like what causes tester drop-off and how to keep your 14 testers engaged

The requirements at a glance

If you are brand new to the requirement, here is the short version:

RequirementDetail
Minimum testers14 testers opted into your closed test
Minimum duration14 continuous days of testing
Opt-in linkUp to 100 testers can be invited via a single link
After approvalProduction access request is reviewed by Google
The 14-day clock resets if your tester count drops below 14, so keeping testers engaged for the full two weeks matters more than recruiting a large group up front.

You can read the official requirement on the Google Play Console help pages, but we will keep our own version updated with the practical details the docs leave out.
